This common depiction of the Savior is one of the earliest known in the Orthodox church and stems from the tradition of Agbar, the ruler of Edessa, being healed of leprosy when a cloth was brought to him which had the image of the Savior's face portrayed on it. The Russian version shown here comes from the school of Simon Ushakov.
